photography tour cape fur seals & hout bay

WHAT YOU WILL BE PHOTOGRAPHING

Depending on the time of year anything from 3000-6000 cape fur seals inhabit the small Duiker Island just outside the secluded suburb of Hout Bay. These seals are extremely agile swimmers with a main diet of fish and squid.

In the past these inquisitive animals were extensively hunted for their skins, meat and oil but happily these day they are well protected under the Seals and Seabird Protection Act of 1973 and no we only 'shoot' them with cameras.

On this tour you will be taken via the beautiful Victoria Drive which hugs the coastline as in passes some of the most spectacular seascapes of Cape Town.

You will see the beaches of Seapoint, Clifton, Camps Bay and Llududno before finally coming over the pass and into the secluded Hout Bay or ‘wooded bay’ from where you will join a tour from the harbour to visit the island.

The island is only 10minutes boat trip away but with magnificent views of the bay and in season whales are also often seen. Once we get to the small island the boat will circle around it allowing you fantastic opportunity to photo it from various angles.

You will return to Hout Bay and leisurely make your way back along Victoria drive for more photography of this spectacular route.

AM only. This tour is a morning tour only as the boats don’t consistently run in the afternoons.

The islands are usually the most crowded January to March when the seals moult and survive on body fat as opposed to swimming for food.

From July to November Whales are also often seen on the boat trips out to the island.

The tour is weather dependant as high seas, winds or rain can cancel boat departures.
