WHAT YOU WILL BE PHOTOGRAPHING
This World Heritage Site (declared in 1999) is situated roughly 11.5km (7 miles) or 30min boat trip away from the V&A waterfront.
The history of this island provides a fascinating look back into the history of South Africa as its function and use has changed with the times. Its name oringinates from a dutch word for seals from the days back in the 17th Century when the island was inundated with them.
Robben island started its written history as an informal post office, in time its favourable isolated position lead it being used as a place to house convicts and later lepers. It more recent years it was a maximum holding prison for political prisoners most famously of which is legendary Nelson Mandela. These days it is a World Heritage Site & museum.
You will be taken by ferry to the island (30mins) after which you will hop on for a 45 minute guided bus trip around the island. Thereafter you will meet an ex-prisoner guide who will take you on a tour of the prison which concludes at Nelson Mandela’s cell. You will gain insight to the conditions under which political prisioners were held and their struggle against apartheid.
The prison and island offer photography opportunities more poignant than great. That said there are beautiful views of Table Mountain from the island and an opportunity to photograph penguins, seals and a Kramat (Muslim grave site).
